danganronpa: trigger happy havoc
i'm one of those danganronpa fans that never actually played the games, and even worse, only watched the anime for trigger happy havoc. so i always thought THH was the weakest game in the franchise, and never really cared about it... but now after playing it, i definitely like it a lot more! i still wouldn't call it the best game in the danganronpa series, but i think i get why some people have it as their favorite.
one of the reasons i didn't really like THH before was because i thought the cast was pretty weak, but i did end up liking some characters quite a bit (♡ˊ͈ ꒳ ˋ͈) my favorites are sayaka, makoto and celestia! i think even if the game clearly wants you to like some characters more than others (kyoko), most of them have enough screentime and personality for people to like them, even the ones that die early (except leon maybe but i just don't like him). the free time events really help with that, i played them all after beating the main story and it made me like some characters wayyy more (like mondo). though honestly some of the free time events feel like they should be part of the main story, i think they make some character's death 10x more emotional... also i'm not sure how to feel about the fact that characters that die early have less free time events, but i know that is changed in the future games.
actually playing danganronpa instead of just watching is so much better, the class trials are so fun!! it didn't even matter if i already knew all the culprits (i think it made me feel smarter lol). a random complaint i have is the mechanic where you have to "absorb" other character's statements to refute someone. a lot of times i knew what i needed to refute, but couldn't figure out what statement to absorb (maybe i'm just stupid). also the murder plans are super simple, like yes i already knew what was going to happen, BUT i liked the class trial gameplay so much that i wish they were harder :(
the story is honestly not that great, it's not terrible but it is kind of generic. i don't really mind it, but if you are looking for a game with an amazing story, danganronpa is probably not for you. like the reason most people even like this series is because of the characters, not because of the story lol.
one thing i wouldn't change at all in this game is the soundtrack, I LOVE IT. my favorite track box 15 :)
would i recommend danganronpa? yes! i'm probably (definitely) biased, but i did enjoy it a lot. if you like murder mysteries and the whole "psycho pop" thing looks cool to you, please give it a try! i think it's a pretty unique game that is worth playing at least once ^_^
